Day 2 in Shanghai

Posted by Dominic on Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

It’s our second day here in Shanghai. My first day was a bit miserable. I got some kind of a stomach bug and spent 20 hours in bed. I am feeling way better now and I’m looking forward to filming today. The rest of the team filmed most of yesterday without me. I did however meet one of the “characters” Gary aka DJ Vnutz. Gary is considered the Chinese godfather of western hip-hop, jazz and funk music. He was spinning this music in clubs long before anyone knew what it was. Now western music has taken off here in China but especially in Shanghai and Gary is a mainstay on the local scene.

Despite my rough first day I’m enjoying Shanghai although it’s like a combination of NYC and Vegas on steroids. Consumerism and western culture is in high gear amongst the 18 million locals. You can’t miss the big “Hooters” sign on the way in from the airport. I’ve tried to load up Han Shan’s “Students for a Free Tibet” website to no avail. The government has a block on everything Tibetan including his recent blogs from a conference in Bethlehem. (I highly recommend them, check celebratingnv.org). So not much more to report until I hit the ground today.
