Han Shan

Posted by the listening project on Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Han Shan grew up in Baltimore, where he got his popular education in punk rock, hitchhiking, and barroom Buddhism. He received a more formal education in painting and philosophy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. For nearly twenty years, Han has supported grassroots efforts for human rights, social justice and environmental protection in the US, as well as internationally. In conjunction with groups like Students for a Free Tibet, he has helped train thousands of young people around the world in effective, nonviolent strategies for social change. He attempts to find time for creative pursuits including painting, photography, and writing and in his leisure time, he enjoys bourbon, rebel poetry, and motorcycles, though of course, not at the same time.

When I first saw this project I was so taken back by the views and the sincerity of listeners that it really forced me to question in a way that I never have before how the rest of the will think of my actions as an American. You’ve illustrated to me just how much potential we have to change. And as an American I am so filled with hope that we will begin to listen to the others.

Thanks to everyone for bringing the Project to the Oxford Film Fest! I know that I first saw myself as an American when I began to travel, and the film opened up avenues for my mind which still needed to be explored. The experience was stirring, and the genuine and candid commentary by Mr. Shan truly reflected the heart it takes to change minds.
